While we can certainly add solar to your entire available roof space, it pays to strategically place solar panels in areas of the roof with the most sun exposure. Since each panel costs the same, you want to maximize its benefit and energy production to get the best return on investment (ROI). Butterfly uses sophisticated rooftop solar design software to model your home’s sun exposure. With this data, we are able to accurately predict solar energy production from different parts of the rooftop. We make recommendations for system designs that maximize energy savings with the least amount of investment.

Can I eliminate my entire electricity bill with rooftop solar?
In some cases, you can offset nearly 100% of your electricity bill providing you have a large enough surface area with ideal sun exposure. PECO, the electric utility covering most of Montgomery County, charges its customers a monthly customer charge which is a negligible fee (~$10) to be connected to a PECO meter. Will my solar system allow my home to be 'off grid'?
While going ‘off the grid’ is achievable, it is not how traditional rooftop solar systems are designed. When you install solar panels, your home is still connected to the electric grid. In fact, this is necessary so your home has power, even when the sun is not shining. Using a net meter, PECO accounts for your solar system’s total energy production and deducts that from your home’s total electricity consumption. When production outweighs consumption, you have effectively offset your electricity costs.
